WINS has two hobby-related email lists. Members may join and participate in either one or both lists. The "wins-talk" list is a discussion list where members may post coin collecting related topics, ask questions and provide answers. The "wins-trading-post" list is for members and member/dealers to buy and sell or trade coins, currency and coin collecting related items. To enroll in either email list, you must first read the rules that apply to both of the lists. All members are expected to follow the list rules at all times. Please keep in mind failure to comply with list rules will attract the attention of the List Administrator. |
LIST RULES |
|||||
These are the rules for the WINS lists that must be followed if you wish to participate on the lists. 1. Send plain text only. The WINS email lists filter out posts created in HTML, RICH, and other enhanced mail types, along with most messages that contain attachments (many "forwards" come through as attachments), however WebTV forwards are permitted. Why only Plain Text? Security Item. Easier for everyone to read, no worries about viruses, trojans, VBS scripts, etc. It is important that you send only plain text formatted messages with no attachments to the list or they will never be posted (since Majordomo will reject them) and you will NOT be notified in many cases. If you don't know how to configure your mail client to send plain text messages, please visit one of the sites below for instructions on how to do so (most popular email clients are covered). www.dolan.acu.edu/HowTo/howtoEmailPlainText.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/nomime.html 2. Use Netiquette, Etiquette, and general common decency. Foul language is forbidden. Attacks on other members is forbidden. Drastically foul language will bounce and never be seen on-list. Drastically abusive people will be removed, never to be seen on-list again. Why Netiquette, Etiquette and such? Does anyone really NEED to use foul language? On a public list? There's no place for it. Don't abuse people here. 3. Who may participate. ONLY the list owner and the list administrator can access the email addresses or any other information about who is on the lists. Why only participants? Security item. Nobody wants spam from 700 different bogus addresses every day because someone harvested our list membership address file. 4. Message Size. There's a bounce filter on the number of lines/bytes a message can contain. Why restrict message size? Security Item. The filter is set quite a bit higher than anything anyone is likely to post. It's there for security against maliciously large posts, nothing more. 5. Who may post. Only subscribed members to the list. Why restrict who may post? Why would we *want* posts from people who can't *read* the lists? Anyone who subscribes to the list may post. 6. Topicality. Keep your posts on the general topic of numismatics and related items. Why regulate list topic? Short of making the list moderated, there's no real way to "enforce" this other than having list admin contact people when a thread drifts off topic. That will be done if a *thread* (not a single post) drifts off numismatic-related items. In short, try and stay on topic, and keep your posts to the proper list for that topic. Sales, wants, auction posts, etc. go to wins-trading-post, questions, comments, trivia about numismatics go to wins-talk. If you get a reply from list admin to one of your posts asking you to stay on topic or try to bring the thread back on topic, please don't be offended - we're just trying to keep the list(s) from degenerating into general chat forums. | |||||
PENALTIES AND "OOPS!" FIXES
Correction will always be attempted via private email FIRST. | Oops, you attached your .vcf business card to a message and it bounced. Or you sent in HTML instead of plain text. You hit "attach" instead of "include" on a text file you wanted to post. Worse yet, you hit the correct button, but the wrong file and sent a message with one line about coins and the entire text of War & Peace. These are not problems. They go straight to the List Administrator, not to the list. It will be forwarded it back to you with an explanation of why it bounced, and instructions (and/or pointers if needed) on how to correct the problem. *Deliberate* and *malicious* breaking of the rules is grounds for immediate unsubscription. The List Administrator will forward the offending message immediately to the President for a decision on if you're just banned from the list or removed from WINS completely. That may sound drastic, and we really don't think we'll ever have to do it. But, if we do have to, rest assured that we will.
HOW TO CHANGE A LIST RULE |
The WINS Administration is open to suggestions. We're flexible on every point that isn't a security issue. Contact the
Mail List Administrator directly (off list) if you've got any questions, suggestions, changes, or need help with anything. If List Admin can't help you, your question WILL be forwarded to someone who can.
