LOT 5. INDIA, GOLD FANAM
The Gold Fanam is a miniature gold coin which was issued by many Indian states from about 1700 to about 1830 to facilitate trade where gold was preferred over silver. Designs originally depicted goddesses, animals and artifacts, but were simplified over time to semi-abstract forms. Fanams vary in size from about 5.7 to 8 mm in diameter. Gold content varies from about 35% to 80% gold. Weight varies from about .33 to .40 gram. Thickness is about 1 mm. Indian States which issued gold fanams include but not limited to Maratha, Mysore, Cochin, Coorg or Kurg, Travancore, Negapatnam (for circulation in Ceylon), Tuticorin, and the Mughal Empire. The sample for auction is of medium grade gold and average size and weight. The Gold Fanam is a very affordable way to own a bit of numismatic gold rich in history.

LOT 44. RUSSIA, 1912 500 ROUBLE NOTE
From Czarist Russia. This is a truly huge note. It measures about 10 3/4 X 5 inches! From what I can remember, these notes were not meant for circulation among the general public, they were circulated within the aristocracy of the time, which may explain why it is in the condition it is. It features Peter the Great and an unknown (to me) Princess. The corners are sharp and there are no rips or tears. The brown circle on the top right of the note is a Lincoln cent, for an idea of size! It rests on the watermark, which is a bigger version of Peter the Greats portrait. Must have been a real pain to get dressed in the morning then!! Email me for larger scans, the detail on this is spectacular. Frame it? But which side..? Postage is at cost.

What will the mints come up with next? This is a brilliant uncirculated 5000 Kip from Laos (its west of Vietnam). Minted this year. It comes in a nice lined wooden case with a glass lid. The coin is very small, 7mm diameter and 0.3 grams of .999, which is why you get a 24 Karat gold plated magnifying glass to look at it! Actually its quite nice and would be a nice gift for a novice collector. COA in the box. Postage at cost.

It looks like this book was printed in 1961. Summary of the US Coinage from organization of Mints in 1792-1961 Series I-XVII--68+/- pages. It looks to be a report of how many coins were minted of each denomination. I didn't know they did such a thing. Shipping is $2.00 in a padded envelope.
