LOT 5. INDIA, GOLD FANAM
The Gold Fanam is a miniature gold coin which was issued by many Indian states from about 1700 to about 1830 to facilitate trade where gold was preferred over silver. Designs originally depicted goddesses, animals and artifacts, but were simplified over time to semi-abstract forms. Fanams vary in size from about 5.7 to 8 mm in diameter. Gold content varies from about 35% to 80% gold. Weight varies from about .33 to .40 gram. Thickness is about 1 mm. Indian States which issued gold fanams include but not limited to Maratha, Mysore, Cochin, Coorg or Kurg, Travancore, Negapatnam (for circulation in Ceylon), Tuticorin, and the Mughal Empire. The sample for auction is of medium grade gold and average size and weight. The Gold Fanam is a very affordable way to own a bit of numismatic gold rich in history. |
