The President's Corner
- June 2007 -

I recently read an article in a local newpaper that lamented the general apathy of American citizens regarding the designs on coins of the United States of America. The information in the article primarily centered on a public survey about coin designs. The survey initially sought insight as to whether the U.S. public thought it was a good idea for the image of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan to be depicted on a U.S. coin. The Reagan-coin-image debate had raged in some circles even before his death. But the discussions intensified after President Reagan passed away in 2004.

The survey was conducted by Coinstar, Inc., the manufacturer of the coin counting machines that are found in retail stores throughout the U.S. The conclusion of the survey is that most Americans don't really care if U.S. money features historical people or historical events. The figures quoted in the suvey results are interesting.

Fifty-four percent of responders said that it doesn't matter to them what's depicted on a U.S. coin. While thirty-seven percent did actually favor the representation of historical people. But for those favoring historical people, it appears that former U.S. Presidents don't really carry much weight. Only forty percent of those preferring historical people thought that a former U.S. President's image was appropriate. While forty-three percent said they had no opinion on whether coins should depict a former President or some other historically important figure.

The survey results might lead one to believe that most U.S. citizens don't care what design is on their coins, just as long as their coins have spending power. I surmise that, aside from the coin-collecting community, most people, in most nations around the globe have similar attitudes.

It's time to issue an early reminder about the WINS leadership positions. In a few months, our active members will be asked to vote for a WINS Board of Directors to help oversee our club for another two years. All seven Board seats will be up for election, including President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Operations Administrator, Newsletter Editor and Librarian. Most of these positions, especially the Operations Administrator, stay fairly busy behind the scenes to help ensure that WINS remains the best internet coin club in the galaxy. But though the offices require a little work, the fruits are rewarding.

The Board seats are open to all active members. The descriptions of the duties and requirements to hold office are delineated in the WINS Bylaws. The election process is also addressed there. When you get a chance, please take a look at the Bylaws.

And please consider donating a bit of your time by running for one of these offices. You can easily throw your hat into the ring when I make the elections announcement in a few months. I hope at least a few of our current Board members will run again. But we can always use the infusion of a little new blood. Think about it. Thanks a lot.

Best Regards,
Ralph J. Huntzinger
WINS#158, President
