From Behind The Green Curtain
- February 2007 -

WINS Email Lists - Even though several members' email addresses seem to be bouncing list mail, probably because of weather-related problems, the lists seem to be functioning problem free.  If you have noticed something that I didn't, please let me know.  Also, I would caution everyone to pay a little more attention to the "Netiquette" portion of the List Posting Rules and not use terms offensive to others.  Keep our Lists "Family Friendly."

WINS Web Site - When I was employed to build small business web sites one of the things we tried to impress upon our customers was that their web site should be redesigned every couple of years to keep the site fresh.  Granted, 90% of our audience are members, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't freshen up our web site's design occassionally.  The current design has been in place for about 3 years and while very functional, it could probably use a face lift.  If you have any design ideas (baring flashing text, music, movies or such) to improve the WINS web site please let me know.

SPAM Blocker - I am constantly searching for new ways to defeat the SPAMMERS and I've found a couple of methods that will assist anyone listing their email address on a web site.  The first is simply to replace the @ symbol in your email address with @ which will prevent some spiders from harvesting the email address.  A better solution uses the following javascript embedded within the HTML:

<script language=javascript>

  <!--

  var recipient = "your name"

  var email = "feedback"

  var Host = "yourdomain.com"

  document.write("<a href=" + "mail" + "to:" + email + "@" + Host+ ">" + recipient + "</a>" + ".")

  //-->

</script>

This will give you a email hyperlink in text to "your name" that is invisable to the Harvest Spiders.  If you need assistance in making this work on your web site, let me know and I'll give you a hand.

Assistance Needed - I am putting together images and descriptions of counterfeit and fake coins for an online WINS article and I am looking for more examples.  If you have any counterfeit and/or fake coins and would like to have the image and data included please contact me.

Auction News - Our Christmas Auction contained the largest number of donated items of the year (and possibly for several years) and put over $400 into the Treasury.  This says a lot about the active members and while there are no pending commitments for the funds one never knows what's just around the corner.

Auction 40 ran from February 10 through 17 and was quite successful.  The next auction is scheduled for March 31 through April 7, and you may begin submitting your lots (10 per member) to the any time.  And lastly for those of you interested, I have placed a new auction schedule on the main auction page.

Thanks for readin'.  "See ya' at the auction".

Thank you kindly,
JD White, WINS#7
