WINS Email Lists - We seem to be having some isolated difficulties on the Talk list that are affecting a small number of members, but I not convinced the problems are all the fault of the WINS email system. In the last month, several members have reported difficulties with the WINS Talk list; some unable to send the list and others unable to receive list mail. After looking into the problems, sometimes for several days, the results were eye opening, to say the least. Two members had software setting problems generated either by reloading of the software or by changing the settings and forgetting to reset them. Another was using the wrong email address for the list, another's email server had been down, and one member's posts were bouncing because they used "enhanced text". The WINS List System caused none of these problems. While not every glitch you experience will be of your own making, the vast majority of all list problems are NOT the fault of the WINS email system either. They can range from incorrect software settings to your email server being down. Another contributing factor in today's email delivery is "blacklisting", which is the practice of banning access to any server pronounced guilty of SPAMMING. Even if the ISP itself wasn't a willing participant, but if one of their clients was the perpetrator, the ISP and all of its other clients pay the price. Blacklisting of an ISP can effectively shut down your ability to send or receive email and you may never know it happened unless you ask them. It can take up to 2 weeks to get an ISP removed from blacklisting. During the last week of the October something was going on late one evening, because the list system began receiving multiple post delivery bounces for over half of the list members. After five failed delivery attempts, the list system suspended all of those member's accounts until they replied to a system email to reactive their account, except that I reactivated everyone first. And while I never found out what caused the original problem, which is often the case, it's all too easy to blame the list system for all of the problems you might experience. Even though we have no server-side support, there are a few things we can do to work on the problem. First, you can do the following:
