From Behind The Green Curtain
- December 2004 -

WINS Domain and Email Lists - One thing that has happened recently that affects all of us is the abrupt shutdown of the WINS email Lists. Unknown to me, the hardsite owner of the server that hosted our Lists notified the new dynexgroup server owner that this server would be shut down because of a loss of income. Unfortunately, no one notified me. When we started the Lists 4½ years ago there were 13 other clients on the server. That number had dropped to five and we were two of them. The hardsite owner told me that it cost more to operate the server than it was bringing in so he pulled the plug.

Thanks to Howard Spindel the Lists were up and running on his server in less than 24 hours. At this time I am looking into moving the WINS web site and evaluating the current DOMO Lists with others to try and prevent this from happening in the future. I hope to have everything sorted out before the end of this year, which just happens to be right around the corner. The move should be seamless, but if you aren't on one of the WINS Email Lists, then please watch the web site's "ANNOUNCEMENTS" page for updates.

ISP Blacklisting - It looks as though this problem is going to remain with us for a long, long time. Unfortunately, your Internet access ISP can be blacklisted at any time. If you stop receiving List mail feel free to contact me. Your List mail may be bouncing or you may have been removed from the List(s). While I cannot fix the blacklisting, I can at least let you know what's going on at our end. Blacklisting of an ISP can last up to 2 weeks so patience's is the key.

WINS List Posting Rules - Once again, we've had another little problem with List members getting along, and even though a stop was put to the thread before it got out of hand it has caused hard feelings between members. I won't go into details because they are unimportant. I will tell you that yet another modification to the List Posting Rules is before the Board. Maybe this will help, I don't know, but I can always hope.

Because of 2 months worth of List problems, I have the following request of List members:

1. Please, look at your post reply and THINK before hitting the ENTER key. Is your reply a positive one? Does it help WINS as a whole and truly add to the discussion? Or is it only a personal reply to another post that set you off that really should be sent off-List and kept private?

2. 2. Let's try to keep the one-liners off of the List(s). List traffic can sometimes be overwhelming, particularly for those of us that receive not only the List mail, but also all of the bounces and a ton of SPAM everyday. Instead of dozens of "Thank you" posts for some act performed adding to it, these would be better sent off-List. This is not to say that the member being thanked doesn't deserve the thanks, but it certainly will help hold down the number of posts that can flood the List. Believe it or not, on a number of occasions recently, the shear number of daily posts on the Talk List has lost us participating members. They simply can't keep up with all of the daily posts and often leave the List because of it. All list posts have the sender's email address somewhere in the post. Please make an effort to find out where your system may be hiding it, and learn how use it and to reply to the sender instead of the Talk List for every little thing.

Auction Update - Auction 25 the "Christmas Auction", is underway and will run until 7:00 PM US MST Saturday, December 11, 2004. I hope you will take a look and join in the bidding fun.

Thank you kindly,
JD White, WINS#7
